Who wrote 'The Railway Children' story and where are the locations used in the film?

Where do the trains go and how long does it take?
There are SIX stations on the line (Keighley, Ingrow West, Damems, Oakworth, Haworth & Oxenhope) and you may start your journey at any of those stations. If you want to see all of the Railway, ask the Booking Clerk for a Full Line Return ticket which gives you a 90 minute round trip on the line. If you wish, you may break your journey and continue on a later train. For a map of the line click here

Do I need permission to take photographs on the Railway?
You may take photographs in any of the public areas on the Railway. If you wish to take photographs from the lineside, you must obtain a Lineside Photographic Permit from the Membership Secretary (Stuart Reid - 01535 646917). If you wish to take photographs for commercial purposes or would like to arrange specialist filming facilities, please ring 01535 645214.
Where can I get something to eat?
There are station buffets at Oxenhope and Keighley serving tea, coffee, sandwiches, pies etc. Additionally there are many excellent pubs in and around Haworth Main Street serving a wide range of hot food. There are also several take-away food establishments within 100 yards of Haworth railway station.

Do you run any courses where I can drive and fire a steam locomotive?
The KWVR has operated Footplate Experience courses in the past, giving ordinary members of the public the chance to drive and fire a steam locomotive outside normal hours of operation.
Although the Railway does not currently operate these courses it is currently reviewing options for the future. Any changes will be advised here on our website.
How can I get to Haworth village from the station?
The easiest pedestrian route is to cross over the station footbridge and then walk through Haworth Central Park which brings you out at the bottom of Haworth's Main Street. On some special event days a special shuttle bus operates to the village from the station forecourt. Additionally, the local Keighley & District service buses (663, 664 & 665) pass the station at regular intervals on their way to the village and beyond.
When can I travel in the Vintage Coaches like the Old Gentleman's Saloon?
Both the KWVR and the VCT have collections of historically significant coaches. These see occasional use during special weekends such as Steam Galas. The famous North Eastern Railway Directors Saloon (The Old Gentleman's Saloon in The Railway Children film) is sometimes used on vintage train days serving Cream Teas along with a selection of fine wines, cakes and other goodies.

Who owns and runs the KWVR?
The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway is owned, operated and managed entirely by members of the Preservation Society. Members have the opportunity of volunteering for work on the Railway.
The Railway's highly democratic structure enables all members to take an active part in forming policy of each department. Members of each department vote on issues which effect their department at monthly committee meetings and elect the chair and secretary of their committee each year who run the department from day-to-day.
The elected officers of each committee in turn report to the Council of the Society (elected by the entire Society membership) which meets each month in Haworth. The KWVR is very proud of this unique democratic structure which is similar to a small town council. The KWVR is essentially a workers' co-operative.
How do I volunteer to work on the KWVR?
There is no typical KWVR volunteer: there are bank managers, shop workers, nurses, computer programmers, telephone engineers, bus drivers, the unemployed, clergymen, students and factory workers - plus the occasional professional railwayman, too!
Some volunteers virtually live on the Railway, others limit their commitment to a day a month. Some work in the public eye, others slave away in workshops (or at computer screens!). All departments provide training to new volunteers. The KWVR has an excellent purpose built accommodation block - Stanier House at Haworth, which is available free of charge to volunteers working on the Line - advance booking is recommended.

Please note that for their own safety and that of the passengers, volunteers with impaired eyesight, hearing or mobility will not normally be able to undertake operating duties or work on the track. However, the Railway's policy is to allow all people to do as much as they can safely and competently manage.
I am a school teacher - can I bring my class to travel on the Railway?
YES - we welcome school groups and offer a useful discount for pre-booked groups of 20 or more. For more details or to make a booking, simply ring 01535 645214 during normal office hours.
Is it true that local residents can get reduced fares on the Railway?
YES - The KWVR is very much part of the local community and offers local people (areas BD 20, 21 & 22) discounted fares on all ordinary service trains. Just call into your local KWVR station with proof of residency in the Valley and leave the rest to us.
Do you have easy access for Disabled Visitors?
The railway welcomes visitors with mobility difficulties or special needs and our staff will happily assist as required. Ramps are available at stations and on trains to allow wheelchair users easy access between platform and trains.
COACHES - our services use classic coaches which were built many years ago and the width of the entrance doors may cause difficulties for some wheelchair users. All trains carry ramps and larger non-folding wheelchairs may be conveyed in the guard's coach.
STATIONS - level or ramped access is available to all station sites, viewing galleries, museums and picnic areas. Ramps are available at all stations except Damems.
TOILETS - these are available at all stations, with those at Haworth having full disabled access. Some trains have toilet facilities but these are generally small.
