ABOUT THE SALOON

The saloon was built in 1871 for the Stockton &Darlington Railway. It was acquired by the North Eastern Railway in 1876 and numbered 1661. Around 1884 it was converted into an inspection saloon for the Locomotive Superintendent at Gateshead. In 1904 it was lengthened by 10 feet and placed on a new bogie frame, which is how it remains today.
In 1969 the saloon was purchased for preservation by Mr John Dawson and is currently owned by Mr Chris Lawson and based on the K&WVR. It is by far the oldest standard gauge passenger carrying carriage in use on any railway in Britain and is still remembered as ‘The Old Gentleman’s Coach’ due to its starring role in the 1970 film The Railway Children.
During 2008, H.R.H. The Duke Of Kent travelled in the saloon while visiting the Railway for its 40th anniversary celebrations. The Duke is pictured above with KWVR Society Chairman Paul Brown.
ABOUT THE LOCOMOTIVE

Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway No. 957 was built in 1887 by Beyer Peacock of Manchester. The locomotive spent its life at Goole shed for the passenger and goods services on the Axholme Joint Railway, and at Wakefield for the coal traffic to and from the Yorkshire and Lancashire pits to Goole and Hull. Withdrawn from service in 1959, it came to the KWVR in 1965 and starred in The Railway Children as 'The Green Dragon'. Out of traffic since 1975, the locomotive returned to full working order in 2001 for the first time in 25 years after a £150,000 overhaul. Still a film star at heart, the engine has also featured in BBC's 'Born and Bred' and the remake of 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'.

FAMILY CELEBRATIONS
The saloon offers an exclusive venue for that very special family celebration. Why not reserve the whole coach for one of more round trips and celebrate in style.
